Biography

Jabez Bartlett was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Van Diemen's Land

Jabez was baptised on 13 July 1828 at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney High Street, Stepney. ^[1]

Jabez was tried at Middlesex Court on the charge of stealing on 6 June 1848. ^[2] He was held, first in Pentonville Prison, Middlesex ^[3] and then at Portland ^[4].

Jabez was transported to VDL aboard the William Jardine which departed Portland, Devon on 12 August 1850 arriving in VDL on 14 November of the same year. His sentence was 7 years. ^[5] His crime was stealing from a building.

Jabez was 23 years of age on arrival. His usual occupation was a ropemaker. He is described as 5 feet 1 and three quarter inches in height with a sallow complexion, dark brown hair and hazel eyes. He was a Protestant who could both read and write. He was single and the surgeon's report of him was 'good'.

Apart from his description, the information on Jabez's conduct record is scanty indicating that he was well behaved. He was granted a Ticket of Leave on 9 March 1852 and a Conditional Pardon on 31 May 1853.

Jabez married Mary Ellen Allcock (nee Walsh) on 13 February 1875 at Hobart. ^[6] However, it is apparent that the couple had been living together as husband and wife prior to this time.
