Biography

WILLIAM(4) BARTLETT ( William 3, William 2, John 1) [1]

Capt. William Bartlett*, born in Beverly June 27, 1741.
He was a mariner and shoreman, and a merchant after 1780. He married Joanna Herrick Aug. 16, 1761. In May, 1788, they emigrated to Emmetsburgh, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, and disposed of their property in Beverly. On the twenty-first of that month he appoints an attorney, as he says, " being with my wife and family bound out of this commonwealth, and my business being unsettled and my affairs very much perplexed," etc. He died Dec. 30, 1794.

ii. Benjamin (5), b. Aug. 24, 1765; Bachelor of Arts; d. Jan. 20, 1795, aged twenty-nine.
iii. John (5), b. Jan. 18, 1767; Bachelor of Arts; d. Jan. 23, 1787, aged nine teen.
iv. Henry (5), b. Feb. 3, 1771; was among the earliest settlers of Ohio, living in the stockade at Marietta during the Indian war; m. Betsey Corey in 1792; and d. at Athens, Ohio, Sept. 9, 1850. [2]
