Memories

I vaguely remember something about Palmyra, but do not know which aunt lived there. Aunt Katie and Aunt Mildred lived together in Bangor, Maine - after their husbands died. I believe one was married to Uncle Mike - I was young and do not remember much about him except that he made me laugh and he laughed a lot. The last time I saw the aunts was when we took a family trip to Maine when I was 18. Until we moved to California when I was 7, we lived upstairs in Nana and Grampy Bartlett's house. The upstairs was made into an apartment, but was not closed to the downstairs. My mom told me I was very close to Grampy, and after he passed away on Thanksgiving (must have been in 1950 because I was 4), I became very ill and the doctors could not figure out what was wrong. I must have been grieving. I do remember kissing him goodbye. He hugged me with the one arm he had use of - I believe he had a stroke. I remember one time I wanted to smoke his cigarette so he let me take a puff and I got sick. He had a good sized garden and I remember "helping" him pick rhubarb. I guess I spent a lot of time with him.

And there's one fact that's been left out: When Nathan married Mary, because she was a Catholic, he was required (by the family perhaps) to convert, and "Nathan Alonzo" was not considered an acceptable baptismal name in that place and time. So he took the name Nathaniel Edward and that was his legal name until he died. I got this from my mother, who of course got that second-hand from either her mother or her father.

Nathan & Mary Rose lived at 300 E Avenue where my father renovated the upstairs section so Rosemary's family could live there. Before Dan & Phyllis married, he had a two story house built at 380 E Avenue where we lived until we moved to California. Passed grandparents' house daily on way to school and every day my grandmother would wave as we passed by and again on the way home. We weren't allowed to stop at her house unless it was previously planned. I loved my Nana so very much. Missed her the most when we moved to Ca;ifornia. I was in high school before I saw her again (for the last time) when she came for a couple weeks at Christmas. She was a real kick in the pants. Susie Wedemeyer 12-7-2011.
