He married Emily Darvall on 30th July 1840 in St James' Church of England, Sydney, New South Wales.[1]. They had eight children at Molong.

Robert passed away of pneumonia on 4th October 1863 in Sydney, New South Wales and was buried in St Anne's Church of England Cemetery, Ryde, New South Wales.[2] Robert passed away the year before the birth of a grandson, AB "Banjo" Paterson, who would become Australia's greatest poet.

Boree Nyrang was sold in 1865 and Emily moved her young family to Gladesville, in Sydney's northern suburbs.
