Edward Barton was a Virginia colonist.

Edward Barton was born in 1664 in Stafford County, Virginia. Edward was a prosperous tobacco planter in Stafford county, colonial Virginia.

In 1700 Edward Barton acknowledged receipt of legacies left his wife and four daughters by Anne Scarlet, deceased [mother-in-law].

  • Know all men..I Edward Barton of county Stafford Planter do own myself indebted to George Mason Gent. Admr. of Jane Green Widow of Joshua Green os said County deced who was appointed by the Stafford Court Admr. to Ann Scarlet deced of said county in just sum of 40,000 pounds of good sound merchantable Tobacco and casked. 15th October 1700. Condition of the obligation is such that if Edward Barton do keep safe & indemnified from the claims of & from my four children which I have by Ann Barton Daughter to Ann Scarlet deced to wit: Constant Barton & Lettice Barton Daughter to Edward Barton for several sums of Tobacco bequeathed unto Constant, Ann, Margaret and Lettice Barton by their grandmother Ann Scaret deced as by her will recorded in Stafford County ... obligation to be void ... Presence Wm. Brook, Jno. Ball, Edward x Barto, Wm. Bennit, Thos. Watts, E. Emms
  • Virginia. Know all men .. I Edward Barton of Stafford County do myself for my wife Ann Barton & my four Daughters Constant Barton, Margaret Barton, Ann Barton & Lettice Barton to be fully satisfied and paid in full for all sums of tobo. & caske legacy or legacies given to my wife and four children by Anne Scartlet deced of George Mason Cent...15th October 1700. Presence Wm. Brook, Edward x Burton, Wm. Emms, Thomas[1]

Death & Legacy

Edward Barton wrote his Will on January 10, 1712 and died almost immediately thereafter. The Will was presented and proven by son-in-law, John Linton, on January 14, 1712.

Will of Edward Barton[2]

"In the name of God, amen. I, Edward Barton, of the County of Stafford, being sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect memory, blessed be God for it, do declare this to be my Last Will and Testament, in manner and form following.
Item. I give and bequeath my soul to God Almighty which gave it, in certain hopes of a blessed salvation, and my body to the earth, to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor, hereafter named, and as for my worldly estate which it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me withal, I give and bequeath as followeth.
Item. I give to my two grandchildren, Ann Linton and Moses Linton, all my land in Virginia, to be equally divided between them when they shall come of age, only my daughter Ann Linton is to have her thirds in it during her life.
Item. I give and bequeath to my daughter Ann Linton, one feather bed and furniture.
Item. I give and bequeath to my grandson William Linton one feather bed and furniture.
Item. I give and bequeath to Sarah Barber one cow and calf, being the young red pied cow.
Item. I give and bequeath to my grandson William Linton one black horse.
Item. I give and bequeath to my son-in-law John Linton all my temporal estate, after my just debts and legacies are paid.
Item. I appoint my son-in-law John Linton to be my whole and sole executor of this my Last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of January 1712. Edward Barton
Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of Owen O’Dayall, Thomas Pimb and Dorcas Venables
This will was presented in court the 14th day of January 1712 by John Linton, Esquire, therein named who made to the same and proved to be the last will and testament of Edward Barton by the oaths of Owen Dyall and Dorcas Venables, witnesses, thereto is admitted to record. And on motion of the said John Linton and his performing what is usual in such cases certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due time and is recorded.
