Biography

Benjamin was the son of Rufus and Margaret (___) Barton [1] likely born about 1646. [2]

His father Rufus died intestate in 1648, and at the time, the Warwick Town Council was assigned to take his estate inventory and distribute the his estate, and record the distribution and commit their decision as Rufus 'will' to be recorded by the town. Evidently the document was misplaced and in 1666/7, the Town Council reconstructed 'the will' and included bequests to son Benjamin as follows: [1] [2]

  • son Benjamin L30 when he reaches age 21
  • the houses, out houses and land assigned to Benjamin
  • widow Margaret to have 1/3 of the housing and lands during her widowhood
  • John Smith, Samuel Gorton and Randall Holden appointed to be guardians to the children and their inheritance
  • Signed by the clerk to the Town Council, March 20. 1666/7. [1]

Benjamin was admitted a Freeman on May 4, 1669. [2]

Benjamin Barton married Susan Gorton, daughter of Samuel Gorton Sr., at Warwick, Rhode Island on June 10, 1672. [3]

Benjamin's will was dated 22 October 1720 and proved 9 November 1720 in Warwick, Rhode Island. [4] [5] It mentions:

  • wife Susannah
  • three grandchildren, viz. Benjamin Greene, son of Jabez; Benjamin Tucker, son of Henry; and Ruth Slocum, daughter of Ebenezer
  • daughters Phebe and Naomi
  • sons Rufus (eldest) and Andrew

Susannah was executor. Receipts were given by Phebe Tucker and Henry and by Naomi Carr and Edward.

His inventory was taken on 3 November 1720.[4] The distribution of the estate was recorded 1722.[4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Benjamin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Benjamin:

I have no problem with a change to Providence Co.

Point of order? The location of birth is listed above as "Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island." Although Warwick is currently in Kent Co., the county wasn't formed until 1729. At the time of birth (and death) Warwick was a part of Providence Co., R.I. Should the correction be made or left as written, as records are likely located in Kent county?
