Biography

Mary Barton was born about 1640 to Edward Barton and Elizabeth (Unknown), most likely in Salem, Massachusetts Colony. Mary's birth year is estimated based on her father's immigration and on her marriage year of about 1661, which in turn is based on the birth year of her first child.

Mary's parents were both immigrants. Edward arrived in Salem from England about 1639 [1]. Elizabeth's origin, arrival location, arrival date, and surname are not known, although she seems to have had relatives in Marblehead, Massachusetts Bay Colony, as she went to live there after her husband died, and she and Edward briefly had land in Marblehead. Elizabeth's surname is commonly given as Gray, apparently without any source records. There was a Thomas Gray of Marblehead who was a notorious drunk, but he is not known to have had a wife or children.[2]

Edward Barton owned land in Marblehead in 1643, but soon moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. By 1666 he had purchased a 300 acre farm in Cape Porpoise, where he and his family lived until driven out by Indians. [3]

Mary married John Purington about 1661, based on the birth of their first child.[4] (John is incorrectly said to have married Mary Scammon). The marriage location was likely Cape Porpoise, as Mary's family was living there at that time.

Children of John and Mary (all birth dates approximate, as well as birth order):

John Purington appears on various records indicating that he moved around a bit, probably seasonally based on his occupation as a fisherman. He seems to have settled full-time at Cape Porpoise by 1679. The Purington family was driven out of Maine in 1690, and settled to Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts. It is not known whether Mary died before or after this move, as no death records have been found for her or her husband John.

Barton-3732 and Barton-344 appear to represent the same person because: Note alternate death date as shown in Barton-344 is the one shown for Barton-3732. Worth merging anyway since there is a already note included in proposed final profile.
