Seth Barton was the son of Benjamin Barton by his wife Lydia. His birth was recorded at Warren, Bristol, Rhode Island as occurring 29th July 1759.[1] The inscription on his gravestone appears to list this same day with the year differing. Either may be correct as the birth record was likely transcribed years ago.
Seth Barton served in the American Revolution, grew wealthy as a shipping merchant, and speculated in real estate. He laid out the subdivision that came to be called Liberty Town in 1812.
Seth appears to have first married in 1779 to Lucilla Rawson in Providence, Rhode Island.[2] He was again married to Sarah Maxwell in Baltimore, Maryland in 1790.[3] He died in 1813 and was buried in Saint Georges Episcopal Burial Ground in Fredericksburg City, Virginia.
