William was born about 1748 in North Carolina. He was the son of Richard Bass and Elizabeth Unknown. He passed away on April 19, 1802 in Sampson County, North Carolina.[citation needed]
William is named in the will of his father, Richard Bass, dated 9 May 1780, Duplin County, North Carolina. Inventory presented and proved in court by Andrew Bass, Exec., January Court 1781.[1][2][3] He was left four pounds and was one of the named executors.
A William Bass is listed on the 1790 census in Sampson County, North Carolina with 2 males age 16 & over, 3 males under 16 and 4 females.[4]
William Bays [Bass] is listed on the 1800 census in Fayetteville, Sampson County, North Carolina. In his household are:[5]

1 male 16-25
1 male 45 & over
1 female under 10
1 female 10-15
2 female 16-25
1 female 45 & over
Note the William Bass appearing on census records 1810 and following in Sampson County, North Carolina is not this William Bass -- he is too young. Perhaps he was this William's son who also appears near this William Bays [Bass] on the 1800 census.
