Research Notes

The Chesterfield County, Virginia Bass Family list Thomas Bass son of William & Cecillia Bass was born ye Fourth Day ofFebruary 1723. [2]

“II. William Bass, b. ca 1690, Dale Parish, Henrico Co., Va., d. in Chesterfield Co., Va. LWT pvd 2/27/1746 Chesterfield Co., Va. WB I, P. 115. According to Bible of William Bass, he m. Cecilia, dau. of Christopher Branch and Ann Sherman on 10/8/1718, gr-dau of Christopher Branch (1602-1681), the immigrant to Va. abt 1620, a Member of House of Burgesses who m. in 1639 Mary Adder. Issue of William Bass follows:

1. Christopher Bass, b. 3/5/1720, LWT dtd 11/8/1772 Chesterfield Co., Va., naming w., Frances, bequeathing the plantation in Dale Parrish. Issue: William, Christopher, Mary, Edward and Joseph. (last two named as his brother).

2. Mary Bass, b. 1/9/1721 Chesterfield Co., Va. m. Mr. Clay.

3. Thomas Bass, b. 2/4/1723, d. 1786 Brunswick Co., Va., w., Mary. His LWT dtd 4/7/1786, pvd 4/2/1786 Brunswick Co., Va., names w., Mary and issue: John, b. 1751, present at the marriage of William Bass to Sarah Shackleford 1789 Chesterfield Co., Va.; Hartwell Bass; Elizabeth Bass m. Mr. Green; Temple Bass m. Mr. Warren; Nancy Bass m. Mr. Stainback;” [3]

    • The John Bass referenced at William Bass’ wedding was William’s brother who was not Thomas’ son as there was no William listed in this Thomas' will. “On 2 June 1843 Sarah Bass, 69, of Chesterfield County applied for a pension stating that she married William Bass, Sr. in Oct 1789, and he died 10 May 1839. John Bass certified that he had been present at the marriage of his brother, William Bass, to Sarah Shackleford. Her sister, Nancy Sublet, 67, also certified the marriage.” [4]
    • The referenced James has been mistaken as Burrell Bass as James was added to his name before middle names were used. DNA has disproven Burrell Bass’ connection.
    • The referenced James Bass is most likely in Richard’s line as his son is named Burwell possibly after Mary Burwell’s family. Also looking at Y-DNA for alignment.

Given descendants are Y-DNA R1b-M269-L47, this designator descends from Nathaniel Basse through only 3 of his sons: John Basse {then only his son Richard Basse with Jane Bryant-Basse only}, William Basse, and Edward Basse.

Thomas descends from Nathaniel’s son-William. Could Thomas be the son of William Bass, being this Thomas Bass? Or did both of William Bass' sons named Thomas die before his son Christopher, explaining why no Thomas is listed in Christopher's will?

Or, is it more likely that Thomas is the son of Thomas Bass and is actually this Thomas Bass?

I'm not sure if you're conflating William, adopted son of John, husband of Catherine Lanier, of Norfolk County with William who married Cecilia Branch, of Chesterfield County. I believe the recent consensus is that William of Chestfield's DNA doesn't match Nathaniel's line. And William of Norfolk has A haplogroup, not a natural son of John. The only current path back to Nathaniel is through Richard>John (or one of Nathaniel's daughters).

I thought this Thomas Bass was son of James Bass who patented land in Isle of Wight County (now Southampton County, Va) in 1725. He may have married Lanier. Later James Bass and Thomas Bass purchased land in Northampton Co, NC near Samuel Bass. Charles Bass of Southampton Co signed the deed. I make James, Charles Jr, and Samuel Bass to be brothers, all born c 1700-1710. The presence of "Jr" presents the possibility of their father being Charles Bass (Sr). A Charles Bass signed a deed in IofW in 1695 and was on poll tax list in 1701. My DNA is RM 269 and I descend from this Samuel Bass.

Thanks Curtis for the insights! I think you are referencing Thomas Bass that descends from Nathaniel-John-Richard. This Thomas’ line is from Nathaniel-William.
