William Bass was born February 18,1646/48 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia Colony and passed away around October of 1695 in Henrico County, Virginia. He may have been the son of William Basse and Sarah Batten.[1]

Facts

  • WILLIAM BASSE, 4th son of Nathaniel Basse and Mary Jourdan, born 1618, married Sarah Batton on Sept 20, 1641. They had a son, William, born 1648, who married a girl whose first name was Hester. Nansemond Connection?

  • See this thread for interesting Nansemond connection(?) [2]

AND Here for marriage: [3]

  • William married Hester Unknown about 1678 in Henrico County, Virginia Colony. They had children (birth dates are estimated):
  • Elizabeth Bass, b c 1680
  • Thomas Bass, b c 1682
  • William Bass, b c 1684
  • Ann Bass, b c 1688

Although William's will names only wife Hester and daughter Elizabeth, other children are indicated by a 1 October 1701 record in Henrico County Orphans Court in which Elizabeth is referred to as "one of the orphans" of William Bass[1]

Albert Bell copied the following from a box of papers in possession of the Nansemond Indians which names the children of William and Hester:

"William Basse son of Wm, borned the 18th day of ffeb-ry 1647/48 A.D. Dec'd to this life in the Yeare of our Lord 1695, wee mourned with his louving wife Hester & sons William & Thomas & daughters Elizabeth & Anne Basse."[1]

Research Notes

2. Updated Notes- I adopted this today and found a link to the handwritten copy of the will but it hasn't been properly indexed on Family Search. The link takes to a set of images and it is page 108: [4]

1. A search of major genealogy sites and an internet search using both Google and Bing search engines have not turned up any additional primary source documents. These are rare in the 17th century and one must sometimes rely on secondary sources and/or memoirs, biographies, etc., written by family or other researchers. If any new sources become available, I hope they will be added here. Strutton-11 14:37, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
