Chronologically, the time frame of about 60-65 years between the approx. birth year for Simon II Basset [died c1295] and the birth year of Ralph III Basset [c1315-1378] is too tight for Simon to have been the great grandfather of Ralph. It is far more consistent that Simon died without heirs of his body and his heir was his brother Ralph.
Ralph II Basset, second son of Ralph I Basset and his unknown second wife.

Not quite true that the time frame is too tight - people did have children in their teens. It is conjecture that Simon, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Basset-93, may possibly have been born later than is widely thought, as is explicit in comments on Simon's profile. But even if he was, he could still have been great-grandfather of Ralph, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Basset-253, born about 1315 - said to be 13 in 1328. If Simon was born a bit earlier than the mid-1250s, as is quite possible, any chronological tightness anyway disappears.
