Elizabeth's age was enhanced by five years on the marriage certificate (but presumably with her father's knowledge, since he was a witness!). Marriage was by banns. Other witnesses were John Bassett (presumably her brother) and James Dennis.
Some of their children were christened in the St Columb Wesleyan Circuit. Their headstone includes Harriet, who died the same year as her father, and a Hessie who died in 1863 aged 10 - it seems probable this is the child recorded as Bessie in the census. Son Reuben is believed to have emigrated to Chicago, in the 1880s, leaving behind a girl friend, who registered a son Reuben Trebilcock Brown in 1887.
Mary H. in the earlier census should be Mary Ellen - in 1871 she is shown as the 24-year-old head of a household consisting of herself and four younger siblings.[4]
