Biography
Mary Bassett was born in Washington County about 1799, and is believed to be the daughter of Thomas Bassett and Sarah Cleveland.[1] About 1815, she married Cornelius Sullivan in Washington County, Alabama.[1]
"Cornelius's first wife was Mary Basset, whom he married about 1815 and who died before the 1830 census. On March 31, 1831, Cornelius married Rachel Danley, born in 1811. They had two sons born in Alabama before moving to Mississippi prior to 1840. Since his older children, were those by his first wife, probably went to Mississippi with him, this provides a plausible answer to the question about the origin of the Sullivans that married Mississippi Sullivans. Cornelius's children, Solomon (b. 1838), Elizabeth (b. 1844), and George W. (b. July 4, 1846, father to D. K. Sullivan's mother), were born in Mississippi."[2]
Children of Mary and Cornelius:
Thomas Sullivan, b. abt.1818; d. aft. 1880; m. bef. 1841, Elizabeth Tedder.
Barbara Jane Sullivan, b. 2 May 1820; d. 10 Dec 1900; m. 12 Mar 1840, George W. Thompson[3]
Constantine P. Sullivan, b. abt. 1822; d. 3 Feb 1897; m. 8 Sep 1854, 1st cousin, Martha Tedder.[4]
Margaret Ann Sullivan, abt. Feb 1825; d. aft. 1900, Jackson Co., Mississippi; m. abt. 1846, Jesse Phillips.
Martha Sullivan, b. abt. 1828; d. Jul 1850, Jackson Co., MS; m. 10 Aug 1843, Edmund Deen.[3]
Mary Bassett died before the 1830 census, possibly from complications of childbirth.
By 31 March 1831, Cornelius was married to second wife, Rachel Dannelley.[6]
