Born in Italy to a family of dancers, Giovanna was brought to Sweden and raised there from a young age. She became a famous ballerina at the Royal Swedish Ballet and was quite wealthy. From her relationship with the Swedish nobleman Adolf Fredrik Munck, she had a daughter in 1787. Munck had been a close friend (and possible lover) of King Gustaf III of Sweden, and rumors flew that Munck had fathered a son on the queen, allegedly as a sort of 'favor' to the king. The queen, Sophia Magdalena, strongly disliked Giovanna Bassi for reasons unexplained. After King Gustaf III died, Adolf Fredrik Munck was exiled from Sweden. Giovanna followed him to Italy, but he refused to marry her.
She returned to Sweden without him, and married Peter Hinrik Schön, with whom she had three sons.
