Biography

Frederick Bassler was born about 1712 in Basel, Switzerland. His first wife was Esther Thommen. It is not known if he married her on board of ship while on his way to America. Frederick left Pennsylvania 1750-1760 and settled in what is now the town of Knox, NY, on 238 acres of land.

Frederick Bassler was in The United States (Pennsylvannia) at some time in the late 1740's or early 1750's as he had remarried his (Frederick Bassler) second wife, Anna Margaret Lieb, who had been previously married to George Lieb who died sometime before 1753. George Lieb was apparently in Pennsylvannia at the time of his death. Anna Margaret Lieb's maiden name may have been Leys. To this marriage Anna Margaret / George Lieb were born two children Johannes Lieb and George Lieb. George Lieb appears to have died prior to 1753 and his wife remarried Frederick Bassler. To this marriage was born 1 son Frederick Bassler in 1753 in Philadelphia Pennsylvannia. It appears that Frederick Bassler's second wife Anna Margaret died sometime between 1753 and 1755. It is possible that she may have died from the travails of childbirth. Frederick Bassler remarries circa 1755 / 1756 his third wife, Anna Dannerin. Frederick and his third wife, together with Frederick's son Frederick age 2 - 3 and his two step children from his marriage to Anna Margaret - Johannes Lieb age 10 - 11 and George Lieb age 9-10 move from Pennsylvannia to Knox New York. A few years later about 1765 Johannes Saddlemire and Ursula Bassler move to New York. Ursula was Frederick's daughter from his first marriage to Esther Thommen. In 1787 Johannes Lieb and George Lieb (Jr.) were living in Knox New York next to their step-father Frederick Bassler;s farm. By 1753's. Whether his first wife had died in Switerland and Frederick immigrated to the US with his two children or whether his first wife Esther came with him to the US is not known.

Anna Margaret Lieb was Frederick's second wife. Her maiden name may have been Leys. Anna Margaret's previous husband was George Lieb. George died in Pennsylvania about or before 1753. Anna Margaret and George's children were Johannes Lieb and George Lieb Jr. Frederick Bassler and widow Anna Leib were married between 1753-1755. By 1755/56 Frederick married his third wife, Anna Danner. There son was Frederick Jr. Frederick, Anna, Frederick Jr., his two step children Johannes Lieb (age 10 or 11), and George Lieb Jr. (age 9 or 10), left Pennsylvania for Knox, New York. Around 1765, Frederick's daughter Urusla Bassler (her mother was Esther Thommen) and husband Johannes Saddlemire moved to New York. In 1787 Johannes Lieb and George Lieb Jr. were living in Knox next to step-father Frederick Bassler's farm.
