Jane was born in Phippsburg, Lincoln (now Sagadahoc) County, Province of Maine (now State of) on January 13, 1808, the daughter of Elijah Batchelder and Sarah Marean.[1]
Jane married Jonathan Crockett on January 4, 1827 in Prospect, Maine after filing their marriage intention on December 11, 1826. Per Town Clerk J. P. Martin, Jonathan and Jane were married by Ezra Treat, Justice of the Peace. They settled in Prospect where they raised a large family. Jane's marriage to Jonathan Crockett is further presented in additional sources including the following:
First, in his Batchelder Genealogy (1898), Frederick Clifton Pierce reported that two sisters, both daughters of Elijah and Sarah (Marean) Batchelder, married in Prospect, Me., quoting (p. 182): "There were two other sisters [daughters of Elijah and Sarah] that married in Prospect, Me., one to Samuel Crockett, the other to Jonathan Crockett....Both couples had a goodly number of children." This information is also corroborated in Kneeland's Genealogical Notes on the Crockett Family (pp. 325 & 635). See both source/links below.
Second, Jane appears as wife of Jonathan Crockett in several documents including the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Federal Censuses for Prospect, Maine, but it is in the 1880 Federal Census by which the marital relationship, i.e. "Jane" as Jonathan's "Wife," is documented.
And third, Jane and Jonathan's children's death records wherein Jonathan and Jane are listed as their parents include Jane's birth name "Batchelder." Three examples are the death records of Jane and Jonathan's daughters Maria (Crockett) Harding, Hannah (Crockett) Clair, and their son Henry.
In 1850, Jane and Jonathan lived in Prospect with their 10 children.[2] Jane and Jonathan also had 2 additional children who died young. In the 1850 Census, members of household of Jonathan Crockett (age 45) are enumerated as follows his wife Jane (age 42) and their ten children: Samuel B. (age 22); Sarah A. (age 19); Kingsbury (age 19); Maria (age 14); Hannah J. (age 13); Elijah B. (age 11); Henry (age 8); Mary M. (age 7); Ammon (age 3); and Eliza (age 1).
Jane and Jonathan remained in Prospect, where Jonathan was a stone cutter.[3]
Jonathan and Jane are enumerated in the 1880 Federal Census in Prospect, Waldo County, Maine: Jonathan age 75 and Jane, noted as his "wife," age 72. Jonathan's occupation was described as "Farmer," Jane's as "Keeping House."
Jane died in 1882. She is buried at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Prospect with her husband.[4]
