Emerson was born in Phippsburg, Maine, in 1779, the son of Timothy Batchelder and Mary Hinckley.^[1]

He married Lucy Marine in Phippsburg, Maine, in 1812. (She is called Lucy Batchelder in the record.^[2] ) Town records are purported to have called him "a most worthy citizen". He was a resident of Phippsburg, where he and his wife had 6 children:^[3]
