Biography

Gideon Batchelder was baptized on 26 Aug 1739, in Beverly, Essex County, in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. He was the son of John Batchelder, Jr. and Jemima Conant,[1][2] who had been married in Salem on 6 Sep 1720.[3][4] No record of his birth date has been located, but guardianship papers dated in 1753 would seem to indicate he was probably born in 1738 or 1739 (see below).

Gideon's father, John, had died intestate by October of 1753, when he was about 14 years old ("upw's of fourteen years of age"). He chose his older brother, William, a resident of Beverly, as his guardian during the remainder of his minority.[5][6]

Marriage and Family

Gideon married Mary Baker in Beverly on 18 Sep 1760.[7]

Children, born in Beverly:

  1. Mary ("Molly") Bacheller (b. 5 Jul 1761; bp. 18 Jun 1769, Second Congregational Church)[8]
  2. Asa Bacheller (bp. 18 Jun 1769, Second Congregational Church)[9]
  3. Cornelius Bacheller (bp. 18 Jun 1769, Second Congregational Church)[10]
  4. Gideon Bacheller (bp. 18 Jun 1769, Second Congregational Church)[11]
  5. Joseph Bacheller (bp. 18 Jun 1769, Second Contregational Church)[12]
  6. Bettey Batchelder (bp. 28 Jun 1772, Second Congregational Church)[13]
  7. Desire Batcheldor (bp. 16 Mar 1777, Second Congregational Church)[14]

Military Service: The American Revolution

At the Lexington Alarm of 19 Apr 1775, Gideon Batchelder, although a resident of nearby Beverly, marched from Danvers as a private with Captain Israel Hutchinson's company and served for two days.[15]

At Cambridge, on 1 Jul 1775, a receipt was issued for an advance on his pay for his service in Captain John Low's company in Colonel Israel Hutchinson's 19th Regiment. Later, on 1 Aug 1775, he was listed as a corporal on the Muster Roll for 1 Aug 1775, which indicated he had enlisted on 12 May 1775, serving for 2 months and 25 days.[16][17]

Corporal Gideon Batchelder served with Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

On 6 Oct 1775, Gideon's name appeared as a corporal on the Company Return for Captain John Low's company in Mansfield's 19th Regiment, where he was listed as a corporal and a resident of Danvers.[18] On 21 Oct 1775, an order was issued at Winter Hill on his behalf for a bounty coat or its monetary equivalent. At some point, he was promoted to sergeant in Captain Lowe's 6th Company, 27th Regiment, according to an undated list of officers.[19]

Research Notes

A Gideon Bachelder was listed in the Maine records of military pensions for the American Revolution. His monthly allowance was $8, commencing 8 Apr 1818. His military rank on this list, however, was "private," which would not match the 1775 record of this Gideon Batchelder.[20] Since it was fairly common for someone to serve for a term in one unit, be discharged on schedule, and then later reenlist in a different unit, further research may show that the pension did, in fact, belong to this Gideon Batchelder. There are records of a Gideon Batchelder who was resident in Danvers ca. 1790, and who may have relocated after than to Maine. This could have been the son, Gideon, who was baptized in 1769, or another Gideon born in Danvers; it could also have been this Gideon.

Have applied the 1776 sticker for this profile. Short service but still...

Regarding your G2G https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1096681/problems-with-unit-designations-and-categories-1776-sticker I have looked at the sourcing and added a 1776 sticker to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Batchelder-2098 There was no 1776 indicator on his profile at all so being missed from the patriot listings.
