Biography

Question: Elizabeth Wild Batchelor is in the 1841 England census as 9yrs old, living with Henry Blatch and his wife Sarah, nee Batchelor [Bachelor-182]. In 1847/8 they all immigrated to New Zealand, on the same ship, but Elizabeth is listed seperatly, as a servant. In 1848 she married William Monson, had 2 children and died in 1862. It has been suggested, she was Sarahs illegitemate daughter, but the name Wild comes from Henrys mother. Answer: Elizabeth died in Dunedin on 9th September 1862 aged 31. This gives her a birth year of about 1831. On her funeral records it is said she had been in New Zealand for 16 years - an arrival date of about 1846 when she was about 15 years old. She is buried in PLOT 22 - BLOCK 27 of the SOUTHERN CEMETERY in Dunedin. There are 4 people buried in the same plot.. Buried with her is a William Frederick Monson, a carpenter of Athol Place, Dunedin. He died on 6th May 1902 aged 49 (birth year of about 1853) - he was from London, England. Also buried in the same plot is Elizabeth Turner Monson. She died a month after Elizabeth but no age or birth date is recorded anywhere for her. Also buried in the plot is a 1 hour old baby Cameron (surname) of Castle St Dunedin
