Biography

James Bate was born out of wedlock in about 1835, and christened on 12 Jul 1835 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of Mary Bate. Their address was recorded as Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, James was living with his maternal grandparents in Eccleston; his grandfather was working as an agricultural labourer.

James' grandfather died in 1845.
