Biography

Edith Bate was born in 1884 in St Helens. She was the daughter of John Bate and Sarah Ann (Holland) Bate. Her father was a clerk and bookkeeper. The family were living in Eccleston in 1891, but by 1901 had moved to Liverpool. No occupation was given for Edith in 1901, when she was 17, probably meaning she was helping her mother with the housework. Her father died late in 1901. By 1911, Edith was the only one of the four children still at home with her mother, and had a job as a typist. She was still single.

Edith may have married in 1917 in Birkenhead district; if so, her married surname was Williams.
