On 25 March 1816 James Bateman, a tailor aged 19, enlisted at Newcastle, Limerick as a Private with the 97th (The Earl of Ulster's) Regiment of Foot. Regimental number 129.
In December 1818 he transferred to the 57th (or West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot and in September 1824 he served with the Royal Newfoundland Companies. He was discharged from the British Army on 31 May 1836, after 20 years service. [1]
