Mary Ann is the daughter of Carleton Bateman and Sarah Cooksey. The Carleton name has been carried down through the generations, and most recently was used as a middle name for one Daniel Glann, a great grandson of Carleton and Sarah. Mary Ann was probably born around 1819 in Franklin County, Indiana.
Mary married David Baker, also of Indiana, June 29, 1837 in Franklin County, Indiana. They were not married long before they had Martha Malinda Baker in 1839. She is most likely their only child, as they probably died, or at least gave up her up to her grand-aunt and uncle by the 1850 United States Census. No mention of them is found later, with the exception of the mention of David in Martha's death record. Martha lived with her great aunt Mary Ann Cooksey Fay (whom we may be led to believe Mary Ann Bateman Baker was named after, as Mary Ann Cooksey Fay is her mother's sister) and Uncle Hiram Fay until her marriage to John McLean Conrad.[1] The name Fay has also been carried down through the family, being used most recently as a middle name for Vivian Fay Conrad Glann.
