Biography
Virginia was born in 1853. She was the daughter of Hezekiah Linthicum Bateman.
She emigrated to England where she became an actress. Her parents were theatre managers, and she made her acting debut at the age of twelve. She joined the Compton Company of actors.
Virginia married fellow actor Edward Compton Mackenzie (son of Henry Compton Mackenzie and Emmeline Montague) circa 1880.
They had the following children:
- Francis Compton Mackenzie
- Sir Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie (b. 17 Jan 1883, d. 30 Nov 1972)
- Viola Maud MacKenzie (b. 1886, d. 1971)
- Virginia Lilian Eumeline Mackenzie (b. c 1894, d. Dec 1978)
After the death of her husband in 1918 she managed the Compton Company of actors. She also founded the Theatre Girls' Club.
She passed away in 1940 at the age of about 87.[1]
