Samuel was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, in 1887.[1] His birth was registered in the third quarter. He was the son of George Bateman and Julia Goodwin. He was baptized on August 7, 1887, in Birkenhead, at St Mary.[2] He was enumerated in the 1891 census [3] as a three year old residing with his parents and five siblings on Dacre Street, Birkenhead. In 1901, [4] he was one of seven childrenliving with his parents in Birkenhead. He was thirteen and an "Errand Boy".
Samuel married Alice Grace Espley in 1909.[5] the marriage was registered in the second quarter in Birkenhead. The couple would have at least one child, Leslie, in 1910. Samuel and Alice were enumerated in the 1911 census [6] residing in Birkenhead with son Leslie (under one year old). Two boarders at residence. Samuel stated his occupation as "Railway Staff Clerk".
