Biography

Laban was the son of Isaac and Martha (Clark) Bates. He was born in Hingham on 30 Oct 1749.[1]

He married Olive Wheelock at Mendon, Massachusetts on December 28, 1768. Olive was born there on April 12, 1750, daughter of Peter and Sarah (Taft) Wheelock. [2][3] Children:

  1. Eli, born on September 19, 1769; married Mrs. Abigail Kelly on October 9, 1792. [2] [4]
  2. Peter, born on June 23, 1771; died on September 27, 1776. [4]
  3. Nahum born on April 8, 1773; died on January 22, 1847; marriage intentions published to Mrs. Perley Ballou on May 14, 1797. [4] [2]
  4. Liberty, born on July 16, 1775 [4]; married Mary Russell on August 11, 1800. [2]
  5. Sarah born on May 1, 1777; died November 29, 1821; marriage intentions published to Benjamin Hall on January 22, 1797. [4]
  6. Olive, born on June 23, 1779; marriage intentions published to Nathan Kelley on April 4, 1803. [4]

In 1775, Laban was a Private, of Bellingham. He marched on the Alarm at Lexington on April 19, 1775, in Captain Jesse Holbrook's Company. Service 7 days. [5]

In 1776, Laban was a Sergeant. He marched to Warwick, Rhode Island in Captain Jesse Holbrook's Company, Colonel Wheelock's Regiment. Service: December 8 to December 31, 1776.[6]

Laban served in 1780 with Captain Amos Ellis's Company, Major Seth Bullard's 4th Suffolk County Regiment: Marched to Tiverton, Rhode Island on the alarm of July 27, 1780. Discharged August 7th after 14 days service. [5] [7]

Laban died at Bellingham on April 7, 1832.[8]
