Biography

Josiah Bates was born on the 13th of June, 1756 in Coventry, Rhode Island. His parents were Francis Bates and Elizabeth.

He married Experience Sherman on the 6th of March, 1777 in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

He passed away in Pownal, Vermont on the 15th of September, 1829. [1]

Note: Could he also be the father of Solomon Bates who is identified in 1793 as purchasing property in Richmond Vt that became the Martin Bates farm. Note 2: in 1763 it is noted that in Capt. Eli NOBLE's Company which marched to Saratoga in July 1781. There were 47 men in the company. Other officers were Lts. Josiah WRIGHT and Jos. DUNNING and Sergt. William BATES. These individuals would have been older than Josiah but likely in his family. Another Company also under the command of Capt. Eli NOBLE marching on the alarm to Castleton October 1781. 26 men. A few of them are also in the Saratoga company. John NILES was a sergeant in this company

Bates-4144 and Bates-1855 appear to represent the same person because: Looks like a good match, found the match when adding wife of Bates-4144, she was already entered in as married to Bates-1855. Both represent the same person.
