James Bates was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
James Bates was born[1] on Tuesday, 15th January 1799, the son[2] of James Bates and Mary (Bottle) Bates, in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
James Bates was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Colony of New South Wales

James was convicted[3] of stealing and transported to the Colony of New South Wales on the Grenada, arriving on the 21st October 1819. He received a Certificate of Freedom[4] on Thursday, 15 September 1825.

James married[5] Elizabeth Beecham Alcock on Thursday, 28th February 1822 in St John's Church of England Cathedral, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia. Together they had 6 children.
