Biography

Benjamin Bates was born in York, Virginia[1] in 1739. He was the son of Fleming Bates and Sarah Jordan.[2]

The Bates family of Virginia can be traced back to the arrival of John I. Bates in 1624. Two of his grandsons, James Bates and John Bates, became Quakers after 1698 as a result of the traveling ministry of Thomas Story. The ancestors of Elisha Bates settled in York County near a place called Scimino where they operated a mill and became farmer-planters. Elisha Bates was born on July 10, 1781, the last of ten children of Benjamin and Hannah Bates. [3]

Benjamin passed away in York, Virginia, in 1803.[2]

Hi John,

The guidelines for project boxes require that the profile be co-managed by the identified project. Would you like me to add the Quakers Project as a co-manager to this profile?

If not, would you move the Quakers Project box code ({{Quakers_Project}}) below the biography and change the word Project to Sticker so that it looks like this {{Quakers_Sticker}}

Thanks,

Debi
