Kris was born in Pryor, Oklahoma to Brenda Gayle Bates and Michael Allen Bates on March 24th of the year 1974. His father was an Iron Worker and his mother was an Architect. He was born on and spent his childhood in the Cherokee Nation. He descended from Cherokee moved there from the East on the Trail of Tears. His grand mother Mary Mildred Hampton-Bates, was the daughter of Willie C Hampton and Golden Hart-Hampton.
Kris grew up knowing of his native blood but also being told it was shameful to be a half breed. Both whites and natives were not accepting of children of mixed marriages. Regardless, he was proud of his heritage no matter what people said or what the percentage of which race he carried.
