Charles Frederick Bates was born in Dec 1858 in Pentridge, Victoria, Australia, son of George Bradley Bates (1828 - 1908) and Ann (Kennedy) Bates (1834 - 1916).[1] Charles' parents were prison warders & wardress and residing within Pentridge at the time of his birth.
Charles died in Jun 1861 aboard the Penal Hulk 'Success' aged ~2.[2] and his remains were interred in the Williamstown Cemetery.[3] His parents were prison warders & wardress and resident on the hulk when he died.
