David was the child of Joseph Bates and Eliza Armstrong.
On 4 Nov 1849 at St. Luke Farnworth (Widnes), Lancashire, England, he married Sarah Gaskell, spinster, daughter of Thomas Gaskell, joiner. Witnessed by J.A. Bates and Alice Gaskell. They both lived at Windle. David was a surveyor, son of Joseph Bates, a Wesleyan minister. [1]
As of 1851 he lived at Eccles, Lancashire with his wife and his brothers George and Joseph. [2]
He passed away 25 Nov 1876 "age 56" and is buried at St. Helens Cemetery, Merseyside, England. [3]
