Charles Melbourne BATES was born 04 Jul 1879 in Second Valley, SA and died 16 Nov 1961 in Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, SA. He married Nellie DWYER 15 Oct 1912 in North Adelaide, SA. She was born 14 Jan 1891 in Adelaide, SA and died 20 Jan 1951 in Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island, SA.
Charlie was the Penneshaw postmaster, and had the mail contract to deliver mail from Penneshaw to Cape Willoughby. Charlies' original farm on Rifle Range road was called "The Kipsie."Charlie also carted all the stone for the now restored Penneshaw Hotel[1]
