Biography

Amos was born about 1874 in Tennessee to currently unconfirmed parents.


He would marry Mary Catherine Bane on the 20th of Nov 1892 in DeKalb, Tennessee[1] and they would have:


In 1910[3] they are living on a rented farm on Husted Road in Montague, Texas. Amos 37, Marry 45, Etter 17, Wilson 13, Lillie 12, Chester 9, Labell 7, Eunis 4, Johnnie 2 and Clennin 0 are in the home. She confirms she's had ten children, and eight survived.

In 1920[6] they are living on a rented farm in Speairs, Bryan, Oklahoma. In the home are Amos 54, Mary 49, Wilson 23, Isabelle 15, Laura 13, John 12, Jenny 9, Dorsey 7, Clarence 7 and Bertha 3 years 8 months. Their Daughter Etter has returned home as a divorcee - age 25, now with the last name of Kapehart and her children Simon 10 and Willie 7.

In 1930[10] they are living on a rented farm in Speairs, Bryan, Oklahoma. Amos 56, Mary 53, Claud 15, Bertha 13 and Ruth 8 are in the home.

In 1940[15] they are living in a rented home Bokchito, Bryan, Oklahoma. In the home are Amos 68 and Mary 32, and their son Johnnie who is now 32 and granddaughter Mollie who is 7. She is likely Johnie's daughter, as he shows a widowed.


He died of Appendicitis on the 12th of July 1957 in Durant, Oklahoma[16].

His obituary would read[5]

Amos Bates, 88 years old retired Durant farmer, died in a local hospital at 5:10 pm Saturday following an illness of nine days. Funeral services will be held at the Holmes Chapel in Durant at 3:30 pm Monday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery with Holmes Funeral Home in Charge of arrangements. Born in Tenn. in 1869, Mr. Bates had lived in Bryan County since 1919. He was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include four sons, William of Durant, Johnny of Blue, Dossey of Sunray, Tex., and Claud Bates of Roswell, N.M., six daughters, Mrs. Lillie Orlds, Mrs. Bell Spence and Mrs. Bertha Lee, all of Durant, Mrs. Laura Puckett of Eva, Ala, Jennie Townsend of San Bernardino, Calif. and Ruth Cryer of Eunice, New Mex., 36 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 7 great great-grandchildren.

He would be buried on the 15 JUL 1957, in the Highland Cemetary, Durant County, Oklahoma.
