Ronald Gordon Nudell Bates, a poet, literary critic and Professor of English was born in Regina Saskatchewan in 1924. He earned a BA (1948), at Victoria College, University of Toronto, and MA and PhD also from the University of Toronto. The subject of his doctoral thesis was James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake. His teaching career was spent at the University of Upsala (Sweden), the University of Toronto and University of Western Ontario. A member of P.E.N., selected publications of his poetry include The Wandering World (1959), The Unimaginable Circus; Theatre and Zoo (privately printed, 1965), and Changes (1968), and his poems have appeared in various periodicals. He is also the co-editor of works of criticism on Erik Lindegren and James Joyce, and the author of critical articles published in journals and a biography of Northrop Frye (1971). Married to Kirsti Helen Möttönen; his three children are Kaarina Anne, Peter Gerald and Liisa Lydia.
