George Bates was born in Staffordshire, England.

George Bates was born in 1844 [1] in Walsall, Staffordshire, England, United Kingdom, son of Henry Bates and Mary Ann Goulding He married Anne Broadhurst when he was 22 and they had five children (Annie Louisa, George Edward, Emma Jane, Minnie Helen and William Ernest) when Ann died age only 34, he married Mary Ellen (Cox) Jolly a year after Anne's death when he was 36 and had three more children ( Gertrude Mary, Elsie Mabel and Frank Oswald Bates) .

George was a gig saddler in Walsall the world renowned centre for saddle making. A gig saddle is a small saddle for use with a carriage-harness. It carries terrets (the loops or rings on a horse's harness pad for the driving reins to pass through) and a hook for the bearing-rein.

He was manager of Cox's leather factory probably referring to Whitehouse, Cox & Company, Marsh Street [2] in Walsall, and he later owned G & A Bates, a Gig Saddlery [3] at 45b Wisemore, Walsall

His son George Edward Bates emigrated to the USA age 17 in 1886

George lived and died age 86 [4] in July 1932 at Rowley Street, Walsall.
