Biography

Ann Batiste was born about 1796 in St Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands. ^{[1] [2]} When Ann – or Nancy as she was also called – was about 18 in 1814, she married a farmer from the Island of Sark, Jean Vaudin, who was about the same age. Nancy and Jean lived at La Ville Roussel on Sark where they farmed a few acres for over 30 years. ^[1] From 1815 to 1835 they had 11 children, all born in Sark, as follows: ^{[3] [1]}

• George Vaudin (1823 – 1905).
• Mary Patty (1826 – aft 1891).

• Joseph Edward (1833 – 1910).
• Maria Judith Ann (1835).

Nancy’s husband Jean died in 1846 when he was about 52 years old. ^[3] Five years later, in 1851, Nancy was still living at La Ville Roussel in Sark and keeping a lodging house with her youngest daughter, 16-year-old Maria. ^[2] She was probably still at La Ville Roussel in 1861 – although the census for Sark is not available online to confirm this. Nancy was enumerated on the 1871 census as Susanne Batiste, 76, living in Salt Pans, St Sampson on Guernsey, next to her daughter Mary Robin and husband Samuel and family, and grandson Frederick Vaudin and his wife Betsy. ^[4]

Nancy died at the age of about 76 in 1872. ^[5]

5. ↑ Searches for Nancy Vaudin/Batiste on the 1881 census have been unsuccessful as of Sep 2023 suggesting she died between 1871 and 1881. Searches for her on online grave/cemetery sites have been unsuccessful. Several online family trees suggest Nancy died in 1872, which is the estimate used here.
