Biography

Henry was born in 1857. His birth was registered in the Clifton Registration District, Gloucestershire. He was the son of William Batman and Caroline Brimble.[1][2] He was christened on 3rd May 1857 at St Philip and St Jacob im Bristol.[3] The parish register records that he was 5 weeks old, his father was a labourer, and they lived at the gas works.[4]

Henry didn’t have the easiest start in life, his father died when he was just aged 1, the youngest of 5 siblings in 1858. His mother was pregnant with his youngest brother, John Perry at the time. In 1861 Henry is 4, his mother is working as a washer woman in Bristol, Gloucestershire. [5]

In 1871, Henry was living with his mother and three siblings in Victoria St, Bristol. He was age 14 and working as a labourer.[6][7]

By 1882 Henry had emigrated to Mexico. His marriage to Minnie Deakin is recorded on 28th August 1882 in Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico.[8] or in Ciudad de México (Mexico City). The marriage registration records him as "Enrique Batman Bremviell", aged 29, the son of Guillermo Batman and Carsbina Bremviell.[9] A notice in the newspaperEl Monitor Repulicano reported they had presented themselves to the Civil Registry seeking to marry. It recorded, "Agosto 7 ... Batman Enrique y Minerice Deakin."[10]

They had four children:

  • Elizabeth (Lizzie) Caroline, born 1885[11]
  • William Joseph, born 7 September 1887 in Orizaba, Veracruz, México. His birth was recorded as a female under the name Guillerma Josèfa.[12] Later records state his birthdate as 7 September 1888.[13]
  • Winifred, born 27 June 1890 in Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico[14][15]
  • Edwin Walter, born 17 November 1899 in Distrito Federal de México (Mexico City). In the birth registration, Henry was recorded as "Enrique Batman de Bristol Inglaterra".[16]

Their son William was sent to England to attend school. At the 1901 census, he was recorded as age 14 and a pupil at Colstons Endowed School in Bristol.[17]

His wife, Minnie, died in Mexico City on 20 January 1905, after a long illness.[18][19] The Mexican Herald reported, "Mrs Winifred Batman, wife of Henry Batman, well known among railroad men here as the locomotive foreman of the Mexican railway, died yesterday at her home in this city." Her obituary said her four children were present at her death: the eldest was the wife of William Wiseman, a cable operator at Salina Cruz; her son William; and the younger children Winifred and Edwin (age 5).[19]

In November 1911, Henry and his son Edwin were among the 1st class passengers aboard SS Meltonian on a voyage from Glasgow, Scotland, to Veracruz, Mexico. The passenger list records them as "Mr H. Batman" and "Master E. Batman", aged 12 or under.[20]

Henry and his son Edwin fled Mexico in May 1914. On their arrival in Louisiana, New Orleans, their immigration papers described them as "refugees" in transit to Bristol, England. Their next-of-kin was Henry's daughter Lizzie Wiseman of Salimon Cruz, Mexico. Henry was recorded as 5 ft 10 in tall with a fair complexion, grey hair and grey eyes.[21] They then sailed to London as 1st class passengers on SS California, arriving on 1 June 1914. The passenger list records that Henry was a mechanic, aged 58, and Edwin was a school boy, aged 14.[22]

Their flight from Mexico was days after the US Navy landed and seized the port city of Veracruz on 21-22 April 1914 to enforce an embargo on the shipment of weapons and ammunition into Mexico.[23] Henry's son-in-law, William Wiseman, who was British vice consul at Salina Cruz, Mexico, was later rewarded by US President Calvin Coolidge for his services to America during this period.[24]

Henry re-married on 16 July 1917 in Distrito Federal de México (Mexico City). His second wife was Encarnación Ruiz Díaz, aged 34.[25]

In August 1919, Henry can be seen crossing the border from Mexico to the United States.[26][27] He crossed the border into the United States again in April 1921, this time accompanied by Encarnación.[28]

He lived in a house at the Mexican Central Railway yard, Mexico City. It was here that his brother-in-law Aaron Landes, an American shipping agent, died in November 1920. Aaron was married to Encarnación's sister, Mrs Ramona Ruiz Landes of Orizaba, Veracruz.[29]

In 1926 an arrival record shows Henry and Encarnación going to Texas[30]

Henry and Encarnación travelled to England. On 7 July 1927, they sailed from Southampton bound for Veracruz, Mexico, on board the SS Rio Panuko. He was described as aged 70 and a mechanic, and his wife was 40. Both were residents of Mexico.[31]

He passed away on 9 April 1937, aged 80, in Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico.[32]

Research Notes

It is believed that after working on the railways in England Henry emigrated to work on the Mexican railways, ancestry links I've accumulated from various tree are confusing. It is believed he first married a Minnie Deakin and had 3 children. After her passing he married a much younger Mexican born lady, Encarnación Ruiz Diaz - the records are in Spanish but they link his parents William and Caroline to the marriage in Ancestry docs: link to his profile: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/87890705/person/350026342541/facts
