Biography

William was born on the 4th February 1820 the son of John Batt (1785 - ~1840) and Sarah (Unknown) Batt (~1788 - 1856) and he was christened on the 27th May 1822 at Paul Street Independent, Taunton, Somerset.[1]

William a chandler, married Charlotte Palmer (~1816 - ) from Friarn, Over Stowey, on the 4th February 1839 at Over Stowey, Bridgwater, Somerset. William's father John was a shoemaker and Charlotte's father, John, was a broomer. The witnesses were William Palmer and Harriet Palmer.[2]

1841 Census on the 6th June William a tallow chandler, was resident in the Shepton Mallett House of Correction, Somerset. According to the Taunton Courier and Western Advertiser 7th April 1841, William had been stealing candles.[3][4]

1851 Census on the 30th March 1851 William a tallow chandler's journeyman, was living at 3 Tucker's court, Bristol, Gloucestershire with his wife Charlotte, and their children William, Eliza, Henry and Joseph.[5]

1861 Census on the 7th April 1861 William a tallow chandler, was living in Albert Square, Bristol, Gloucestershire with his wife Charlotte, and their children Henry, Joseph, Elizabeth and George.[6]

1871 Census on the 2nd April 1871 William a chandler, was living in Albert Square, Bristol, Gloucestershire with his wife Charlotte, and their children Elizabeth, George, Edward and Eliza.[7]
