OBITUARY - MR. THOMAS C. BATT. Mr. Thomas C. Batt passed peacefully to his eternal reward recently at his residence, Mantle Hill, at the mature age of 89 years. The late Mr. Batt, who was a native of Wiltshire, England, was born during the reign of William IV and therefore lived under the rule of four sovereigns. He was an eye-witness to the attempted assassination of Queen Victoria. He left England at the age of 25 years, emigrating to Australia in the sailing ship Kent; He spent the first few years in the land of his adoption on the goldfields of Ballarat, Geelong and other noted diggings. With the late Peter Webber and Michael Vaugnan he was at Lambing Flat, now known as Young, when the great 'roll-up' took place. After spending a short time in New Zealand, he returned to New South Wales, finally settling in the Moruya district— nearly half a century ago. After coming to Australia he married Miss Martha Hibberd, of Lancashire, England, who predeceased him about five years ago. Despite his four-score years and nine, Mr. Batt was a remarkably active and well preserved man. Even on the morning of his demise he was up and about, assisting his son and daughter-in-law, with whom he lived. Although he had medical attention for heart affection, no immediate danger was anticipated. However he had been fortified by the rites of his Church at the hands of the Rev. Father Bossence and was also visited by the Sisters of the Urood Samaritan. Deceased leaves two sons, Charles (N.Z.), Thomas (Moruya), and three daughters, Mrs. Alt (Waitara, Sydney), Webster (Tasmania), and Maud (North Sydney). The Rev. Father Bossence officiated at the grave side:— R.I.P.
