There is more than one possibility for his date of birth and his parents. Both his burial record and his gravestone indicate a birth date of around 1784. Most likely he was the son of James Batt and Judith West, christened 6 October 1782.^[1]

The possibility exists that he was the son of William Batt and Sarah (Sanders) christened 20 March 1785,^[2] which matches the age at death more closely. Least likely is the possibility that he was christened on 10 August 1777, son of Stephen Batt and Mary (Weaver).^[3] Oliver-4952 20:10, 15 September 2022 (UTC).

James married Mary Colebrook at Smarden on 28th January 1810.^[4]
