Biography

John Batman (or Battman) was the son of Samuel Battman, carpenter, of Upton Cheynney, in the parish of Bitton, Gloucestershire, and his wife Mary.[1][2]

He was baptised on 31 October 1703 at St Mary, Bitton, and entered in the parish register as "John ye son of Samull Batman by Mary his wife."[2]

He is likely to be the John Battman, house carpenter, of the hamlet of Oldland in the parish of Bitton, Gloucestershire, who made a will on 14 February 1766.[3] He died soon afterwards and was buried at Bitton on 16 February 1766.[4]

He divided his estate between his children as follows:

  • his sons Isaac and George to receive a cottage and an acre of land at Drawn Hill,
  • his daughters Mary and Sarah to receive an acre of land at Woodstock
  • his son Benjamin to receive half an acre of land at Woodstock
  • his sons William Abraham, John and Steven to receive £4 10s each
  • his son Joseph to receive £5

His will was proved on 14 October 1766 by his son Benjamin, one of his executors.[3]

In 1772, John's sons George, William and Abraham became heirs to the estate of William Battman, carpenter, of Upton Cheyney, The estate papers describe George as William Batman's "natural and lawful nephew".[5]

Speed-878 I. Speed
Battman-31 and Battman-41 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles are for John Batman, house carpenter, who died in 1766 in Bitton, Gloucestershire. There is some uncertainty about the name of his father, but the sources suggest it more likely to be Samuel than Thomas.
