Obituary: Franklin Evening Star 9 Jun 1947 Thomas Batton Retired Farmer, Dies Early Monday Funeral Services Are to Be Held Wednesday; 53 Descendants Survive

William Thomas Batton died at the age of 85 at his home, three and one-half miles south of Franklin, Monday morning at 12:10 o'clock. Although he had been in failing health for several years his condition did not become serious until Sunday morning.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Vandivier mortuary, with the Rev. G. F. Powers, of the Nineveh Christian church in charge.

Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

Friends may call at the late home any time after 7 p.m. Monday and are invited to attend the rites.

Mr. Batton was the son of Porter Batton and Orella Groves Batton and was born in Ohio, Aug. 31, 1861. When he was a child, the family came to Indiana settling in Brown county. His father was born in England.

A farmer, he had operated farms in Johnson and Shelby counties most of his life, moving to his present home four years ago.

10 Children Living

On December 13, 1886, Mr. Batton was married to Miss Ella Coy, at Amity. They were the parents of ten children, all living. Mrs. Batton died May 15, 1943.

Mr. Batton retied from farming several years ago and since that time he had raised chickens and gardened as a hobby. He liked to read and had been known to sit up all night to finish reading an interesting book, although he had to work the next day. He was devoted to his family.

The children surviving are Mrs. Ida Pierce, Mrs. Catherine Kern, of Indianapolis; Sam Batton, Mrs. George Coffman and Mrs. Carrie Bates, all of Franklin; Mrs. Mary Oakes, of Edinburg; William Batton, of Shelbyville; Mrs. Mable Long, of New Castle, and Mrs. Edith Hoskins and Henry Batton, both at home.

Also remaining are 22 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and one brother, Ed Batton, of Indianapolis.

Mr. Batton was a member of the Amity Baptist church.
