Research Note

There is not enough information in the records available to definitely sort out the Eichenlaub individuals and relationships in this early period. So the best that can be done is to

  1. Show there is evidence that a woman named Elizabeth married to a man named Eichenlaub or Eychenlaub definitely did live in the Pfalz area around the Rhine River between Speyer and Freiburg im Breisgau in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
  2. Compare the information found in unsourced genealogies for her birth, death, marriage and relations with the information found in the available sources which have been found, noting consistencies, inconsistencies, and trying to show what the information in the unsourced genealogies is based upon.Brandt-1372 00:59, 9 October 2019 (UTC)Mary Brandt Jensen

Given the variety of dates and locations appearing in the sources detailed in this note, it is possible, probably even probable, that there was more than one person named Elizabeth married to a man named Eichenlaub living in the Pfalz between about 1560 and about 1650.

Date and Place of Birth

Several unsourced genealogies give an variety of birth dates and locations for Maria Elizabeth Bauer.

  • about 1560 [1]
  • about 1585 to about 1650, Herxheim[2]
  • about 1595 to 9 Jul 1666, Mauchenheim, Bayern (but note that this tree estimates her marriage at about 1593 which is two years prior to the estimated birth date. [3]

No sources have been found to support any of these dates and locations or even giving her last name at birth.

Marriage

The unsourced genealogies are generally in agreement that Elizabeth married Caspar Eichenlaub, that her name was Elisabeth Margrethe Bauer and that the marriage likely occurred around 1593. None of them cite any sources for the marriage.

Possible Children

Since the baptismal records which have been found for early Eichenlaub children rarely give the last name at birth of the mother, it is difficult to determine which children are those of Elizabeth Bauer. Also the lack of church records going far enough back for her children's baptisms and marriages further contribute to the difficulty in establishing exactly who her children were. Generally the church books start around the time of the birth for Elizabeth's grandchildren.

Baptism records have been found for two Eichenlaub children in the Protestant church in Barbelroth, but whether these are actually children of [Eichenlaub-104|Caspar Eichenlaub]] and Elizabeth Margarethe Bauer is uncertain. The parents on these records are listed only as Hanss Eichenlaub and his wife Elizabeth. There is no mention of the name Caspar or the last name at birth of the mother. Barbelroth is a considerable distance for that time period from Heitersheim, another location that appears in a lot of early Eichenlaub records, but both towns are near the Rhine River which was a major and comparatively easy transportation route. During that period, the Bishop of Speyer was also trying to recruit settlers to replace those killed in the constant wars. So it is possible these could be children of the Caspar Eichenlaub who died in Heitersheim and his wife Elizabeth. However, Barbelroth is much closer to Frankenfeld (a third location that appears in some early Eichenlaub records), less than 10 km, and also relatively close to Herxheim and Hayna where Eichenlaubs are clearly found slightly later.

  • Barbara Eichenlaub was baptised the 24 Mar 1597[4]
  • an unnamed daughter was baptised on 23 Mar 1600[5]

Other children listed by various genealogies as children of Caspar Eichenlaub and his wife Elizabeth include:

  1. Caspar Eichenlaub who
    • married Maria B before 1623 and had the following children
      • Martin Eichenlaub who was baptized in Heitersheim on 11 Nov 1623[6]
      • Joannes Eychenlaub who was baptized in Heitersheim on 11 May 1621[7]
      • Maria Eichenlaub who was baptized in Heitersheim on 21 Jul 1626[8]
    • married Elisabetha Bürckhler in Heitersheim on 23 Jul 1628[9]
    • Given the dates in these records, its remotely possible these records relate to late marriages of the Caspar Eichenlaub who died in Heitersheim and was buried on 14 Nov 1628.
  2. Margaretha Eichenlaub who married Hans Lorentz Ball in 1619 in Mauchenheim
  3. Heinrich Eichenlaub possibly born 19 Aug 1600
    • who died and was buried from the Catholic Church in Herxheim on 4 Jan 1684[10],
    • whose widow Margaretha died and was buried from the Catholic Church in Herxheim on 29 Jun 1696[11],
    • who may have had a son named Christoph Eichenlaub, likely born about 1670, married Anna Maria Bihrer in the Catholic Church in Herxheim on 09 Jan 1696,[12] and died around 21 Jan 1732
  4. Dieter Eichenlaub
    • who died and was buried from the Catholic Church in Herxheim on 14 Jan 1678.[13]
    • whose widow Catherine died and was buried from the Catholic Church in Herxheim on 29 Nov 1684[14]

Other possible children listed by unsourced genealogies, for whom no records have been found to even verify their existence, include:

  1. Anna Eichenlaub purportedly born around 1595 in Heitersheim[15]
  2. Georg Eichenlaub purportedly born after 1598 in Heitersheim[16]
  3. Elisabeth Eichenlaub purportedly born around 1600 in Heitersheim[17]
  4. Margaret Eichenlaub purportedly born 19 Aug 1600 in Heitersheim[18]
  5. Elisabetha Eychenlaub purportedly born around 1602 in Herxheim[19]
  6. Jacob Eichenlaub purportedly born around 1603 in Herxheim[20]
  7. Adam Eichenlaub purportedly born around 1606 in Heitersheim[21]

These appear to have come from unsourced Ancestry Trees.[22] The Ancestry Tree data might possibly have been based on assumptions made about the names appearing in a Heitersheim church receipt concerning disbursement of a capital donation made by Leonhard Cabelius and his wife Anna Eichenlaub, Johann Georg Eichenlaub, Johann Jakob March and his wife Elsbeth Eichenlaub, Jakob and Ada Eichenlaub found at Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg.[23], but there appears to be no mention of Kaspar in the document.

Death and Burial

Some of the unsourced genealogies estimate Elizabeth's death date at 1650 while others list a specific date of 9 Jul 1666. However, this date is associated with the death of a younger Margaret Eichenlaub whose husband was named either Hans Heinrich Bahl or Hanss Lorentz Bahl.
