John was born on 30 September 1844 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA. He was the son of Jacob Bauer Jr and Anna Elizabeth Burger.[1] John was married to Margary Buffehr.

At the outbreak of the Civil War John joined the "three months-men" and then the 9th Pa Vol Cav and served until the end of the war. He was one of the pioneer residents of Hays City, Kansas, when the settlers were in constant fear of the Indians, with whom he had many encounters. His eldest son, John Jr, was the first white child born in Hays City. He lived in Kansas about 29 years and returned to Wilkes Barre, resuming his shoemaking business. In his early years, he was a volunteer fireman in Wilkes Barre. Both of his parents were born in Germany.

Children: John Bauer, Frank Bauer, Henry Bauer, Josephine Weisner, Elsie Morrissey, Freda Sheehan, Doris Bauer, Anna Grass. Siblings: Peter Bauer, Charles Bauer.
