Samuel was born in 1773 in Villigen, Aargau, Switzerland. He was the son of Heinrich Baumann and Susanna Baumann.
He married Barbara Baumann in 1797 in the church of Rein, Remigen.
Die «Bäni-Dächsler» hiessen eigentlich Baumann; doch war dieses Geschlecht in Villigen so zahlreich, dass man den einzelnen Stämmen zusätzliche Dorfnamen gab. Als Samuel Baumann vom Zweig «Bäni» und Barbara Baumann vom Zweig «Dächsler» 1797 heirateten, kombinierte man daraus die «Bäni-Dächsler».
The «Bäni-Dächslers» were actually called Baumann; however, this lineage was so numerous in Villigen that the individual clans were given additional village names. When Samuel Baumann from the «Bäni» branch and Barbara Baumann from the «Dächsler» branch married in 1797, they became «Bäni-Dächsler».[1]
They had five sons and three daughters. Samuel was a weaver, and their poor family of ten occupied just one quarter of a three-story stone house.[1] Four of their sons migrated to Sandusky county, Ohio:
