John died on the 3rd February 1876 in Dundee, Scotland. His estate passed to Crichton Milne Baxter his brother a manufacturer, Charles Ross Baxter his cousin a wholesale grocer, Walter Baxter his son-in-law a solicitor, and to Charles Philip (abt.1810-), a calenderer, all of whom were in Dundee.[8]
