Sylvester H. Baxter was born on 2 Feb 1817 in Massachusetts according to a handwritten document from a deceased relative. However, Charlotte A. (Baxter) Taylor's death certificate states that he was born in Connecticut.
He married Jane Ann Van Slyke.[1]
He and Jane appeared on the census of 29 July 1850 at Utica, Oneida County, New York.[2]

This county surrounds Chicago where he was at that time. A living family member found a record where he went by Henry. Cook, Illinois, United States. [8]
Note: 3.1.2020: From the History of Erie County, Pennsylvania, 1884, under George W. Baxter's bio: "His father, Silvester Baxter, railroad engineer, and prominent in connection with that profession in the West as pioneer, was a native of Mass., and a descendant of the Batters (sp) of that State.".
9.3.2017: The 1850 US Census shows that he was born in "Map". An Ancestry Expert stated that, at that time, p's were used for double s's, so that means he was born in Massachusetts.
9.23.17: Death certificates of 2 of his kids show that he was born in Connecticut.
12.13.17: Found another instance where his birth was in Connecticut: On census record of daughter Nancy and William Cox.
1.25.18: From letter written by Annie Scott Baxter to Gerald Baxter. In it, she states that he was born in Hartford, CT or Massachusetts.
Letter also states he was killed on the Chicago and Rock Island Railway at Peru, IL in 1857.
