Biography

Elizabeth was born about 1818, in Scotland, according to 1851 Census.

Elizabeth Ross Baxter married Theodore Baxter on the 4th February 1836 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. They both had the same surname, and may have been related.^[1]

Their marriage is listed on London Sandemanian Marriages and other links between church members. There were about 70 marriages between the families of the London Sandemanians of which this was one.

1851 Census on the 30th March 1851 Elizabeth was living in Hackney, Middlesex with her husband Theodore, and their children Robert, Theodore, Richard, John, Ann, Charlotte and Hannah. Sarah Barett a servant from Old Buckenham, Norfolk was also there.^[2]

1861 Census on the 7th April 1861 Elizabeth was living at 8 Cross Street, Islington, Middlesex with her husband Theodore, and their children Richard, John, Ann, Hannah, Emma, Charles, Eliza, Charlotte and Edward.^[3]

1871 Census on the 2nd April 1871 Elizabeth was living in Islington, Middlesex with her husband Theodore, and their children John, Emma, Charles, Eliza, Charlotte, Edward and Caroline. Also living there were their grandchildren Theodore, Walter and Edith Baxter.^[4]

1881 Census on the 3rd April 1881 Elizabeth was living at 17 Arthur Road, Islington, Middlesex with her husband Theodore, and their children Charles, Charlotte and Caroline. Also living there were their grandchildren Theodore, Walter and Edith Baxter.^[5]

1891 Census on the 5th April 1891 Elizabeth was living at 17 Arthur Road, Islington, Middlesex with her husband Theodore, and their children Eliza, Edward and Caroline, and their grandchildren Stephen Whitelaw and David Whitelaw.^[6]

Elizabeth died aged 78 in 1895 in Islington, Middlesex.^[7]

Involvement in the Sandemanian Church

Theodore and Elizabeth raised two of their grandchildren, Stephen Whitelaw and David Whitelaw, and according to David's wikipedia page, Theodore and Elizabeth were both members of the Islington Sandemanian Church.^[8] However, Elizabeth is not on the London Sandemanian Church membership list 1762 – 1868.

The London Sandemanian church supported the congregation from Old Buckenham, Norfolk. This link was probably how they got to know Sarah Barett, their servant in 1851.
